If you’re located outside the United States and trying to subscribe to Gemini Pro, you might have encountered the frustrating “Not available in your region” message. This guide explains why this happens and how to fix it.

My Frustrating Experience #

I’ve been wanting to subscribe to Gemini Pro for a while now. However, every time I tried to upgrade, it just showed “Not available” or “Not eligible” — no further explanation, no helpful hints.

After digging into the issue, I finally figured out the root cause and successfully subscribed to Gemini Pro. Here’s what I learned.

Why You Can’t Subscribe #

To subscribe to Gemini Pro, your Google account must be recognized as a US account. Google determines this based on two factors:

  1. Account Service Region — Where Google thinks your account is located
  2. Payment Profile Region — The country associated with your Google Pay/Play payment methods

Both must be set to the United States. If either one shows a different country, you’ll be blocked from subscribing to Gemini Pro.

Step 1: Check Your Account Region #

First, let’s verify what region Google has assigned to your account.

Check Your Terms of Service Region #

Visit: https://policies.google.com/terms[1]

You should see something like:

“Country version: United States”

How to Change Your Account Region #

If your account region is not set to the United States:

  1. Visit: https://policies.google.com/country-association-form[2]
  2. Fill out the form:
    • Reason: Select “Other”
    • Description: Enter something like:

“For my academic work, I require access to Gemini. Please assist me in setting my location to the U.S.”

  3. Submit the form and wait for Google to process your request.

Step 2: Check Your Play Store Payment Region #

Even if your account region is correct, your payment profile might still be pointing to another country.

Verify Your Play Store Region #

Visit: https://play.google.com/store/games?device=windows[3]

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. You’ll see the country associated with your Play Store. If it’s not “United States,” you need to fix this.

How to Change Your Payment Region #

Option 1: Close Your Existing Payment Profile

  1. Visit: https://payments.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings[4]
  2. Scroll to the bottom
  3. Click “Close payments profile” to close your current profile

Option 2: Create a US Payment Profile

If closing your profile doesn’t work, you may need to create a new US-based payment profile:

  1. Visit: https://payments.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/paymentmethods[5]
  2. Add a new payment method
  3. Use a US-issued card or a virtual card with a US billing address
  4. This will create a US payment profile for your account

Step 3: Subscribe to Gemini Pro #

Once both your account region and payment profile are set to the United States, you should now be able to subscribe. Just go to Gemini and try the upgrade option again.

Conclusion #

Google’s region restrictions can be frustrating for users outside the US who want to access Gemini Pro. By ensuring both your account service region and payment profile are set to the United States, you can unlock access to this service.

Good luck, and feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions!
